Embracing the Next Chapter: Returning to Work
As a mom and the founder of Wash with Water, I know firsthand how stepping back from work after having children can feel both necessary and challenging. After taking that time to nurture your family, thinking about returning to work can stir up all kinds of emotions—excitement, uncertainty, even a bit of guilt. But I’m here to tell you: you are not alone, and this next chapter can be one of your most fulfilling yet.
When I decided to start Wash with Water, I didn’t leap back into the work world overnight. It was a gradual process of reconnecting with my passions, balancing my family’s needs, and finding a way to make it all work. Whether you’re thinking of re-entering your previous career, exploring new opportunities, or launching something of your own, here are a few thoughts I’d love to share as you consider your journey back to work:
1. Trust Your Instincts—You Know More Than You Think
Motherhood equips you with so many skills—patience, multitasking, adaptability, problem-solving, and more! Don’t underestimate how much these experiences have strengthened your abilities. Whether you’ve been away from work for six months or six years, you’re bringing invaluable life skills back into the professional world.
2. Take It One Step at a Time
If the idea of jumping back into full-time work feels overwhelming, that’s okay. Consider exploring part-time options, freelance work, or even volunteering to ease the transition. Giving yourself space to find the right balance will help you feel more confident in your decision. Remember, this is about what works for you and your family.
3. Set Realistic Boundaries
As much as we want to be everything to everyone, it’s important to set boundaries as you transition back to work. Whether that means scheduling time for self-care, defining work hours, or delegating certain tasks at home, it’s crucial to carve out time for yourself to avoid burnout.
4. Reconnect with Your Passion
Going back to work can be a beautiful opportunity to rediscover your passions. After becoming a mother, I found my calling through Wash with Water, creating products that aligned with my values of nurturing and caring for families. Think about what truly excites you. It could be a perfect time to pivot into a field or project that brings you joy and fulfillment.
5. Seek Support from Other Moms
One of the greatest gifts of motherhood is the community it brings. Surround yourself with a supportive network of fellow moms who understand the unique challenges of balancing work and family life. Whether it's a quick coffee chat or a virtual check-in, having others to lean on can make all the difference.
6. Embrace the Flexibility of Modern Work
The workplace landscape has evolved, especially in recent years. Flexible schedules, remote work options, and family-friendly environments are becoming more common. Don’t be afraid to seek out opportunities that honor your role as both a mom and a professional. You deserve a job that supports your whole self!
7. Celebrate Your Wins, Big and Small
Returning to work after a break is a big deal. Whether you land your dream job, launch a side project, or simply take the first step of updating your resume—celebrate it! Each accomplishment is a reminder of your strength and resilience.
As a mother, you’ve already taken on one of the most important roles there is, and now, you’re ready for this new chapter. It’s not about doing it all—it’s about doing what feels right for you and your family.
I’m cheering you on every step of the way!
Warmly,
Stephanie Pascarella
